Egg Cryopreservation & Fertility Preservation

Since 2010, egg cryopreservation (freezing) has been applied for social reasons. It is recommended in cases where there is no partner and a young woman wants to preserve her fertility unchanged over the time.

Egg cryopreservation is now applied with the new method of vitrification (rapid freezing) which allows great egg survival rates after thawing and the achievement of high success pregnancy rates when the woman will decide to create her family either with a suitable partner or with a sperm donor that will been chosen for fertilization.

Egg cryopreservation is a recommended method for women that are either concerned about the effect of time on their fertility or women who are faced with a sudden cancer diagnosis and must preserve their fertility before they have to go through chemotherapy and radiation therapy that are often gonadotoxic and destructive to the ovaries.

It has to be noted that the success of the method is directly related to the woman’s age and the number of eggs produced. It must therefore be understood that the girls concerned should not rely on the cryopreservation of just a few eggs but on the retrieval of more eggs, with the minimum number for the ages under 35 being 10 eggs. Therefore, there should not be any hesitation to repeat the procedure more than once, in order to ensure the maximum egg banking number that will grant her greater motherhood chances in the future.
