Fertilisation with the PICSI (Physiological Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection technique)

PICSI micro fertilisation acts as an extra sperm quality filter and is a technique used for the best possible selection of sperm, which will be used for injection into the egg with ICSI micro fertilisation.

The PICSI method is literally an extra test for the sperm and involves placing the sperm in hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural compound found in the body. There, the sperm that will attach to the hyaluronic acid, are the most functional to proceed to fertilisation and therefore out of them, the one that will fertilise each egg is selected microscopically.

PICSI is a method suggested in cases with abnormal sperm count which is usually characterised by very poor morphology (teratospermia) in combination with high percentages of fragmented DNA in the sperm nuclei. Finally, PICSI as a technique is often used by embryologists in the laboratories I work with, in cases of very abnormal sperm counts with the above characteristics, in order to optimise the chances of a successful fertilisation.
